Man With Gun Detained at AMLO Rally Sunday; AG Says It Didn’t Happen

A man with a gun was reportedly detained at a rally for Andrés Manuel López Obrador in the city of Ecatepec, State of Mexico, on Sunday. Undercover bodyguards for the presidential candidate detected the man acting suspiciously as he approached AMLO and were able to disarm him without further incident, reported Reforma.

Initial reports said the man was turned over to local authorities, but a statement from the State of Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office denied having an armed man turned over to them, reports El Universal.

The AMLO campaign released a statement earlier today with the unit number of the police officer on patrol who they say the armed man was turned over to. They assure the man never posed a threat to the candidate.

López Obrador has said that despite this incident, he has no plans to increase security or limit access to him during campaign events.

AMLO hosted a rally for students in La Plaza de las Tres Culturas in Tlatelolco earlier today. More than 10,000 students and supporters attended.
